APRIL 2014 GENERAL CONFERENCE REMARKS ON LGBT ISSUES

Mormons Building Bridges is a grassroots organization that supports faithful Latter-day Saints in making their homes and congregations safe and welcoming for LGBT/SSA individuals in accordance with current policy and doctrine of the Church. We pursue our mission because of our religion and not in spite of it. Therefore, Mormons Building Bridges  deliberately does not engage in discussions over the merits of either side of the same-sex marriage debate. MBB loves and supports LGBT and SSA people in whatever life path they choose. For some that means same-sex marriage. For others it means a mixed orientation marriage or celibacy. MBB focuses on the person and not on the merits of legal/rights debates. Those debates will settle themselves in the public arena, but in the long and short term, the need for love and support of individuals will remain. Hence, MBB’s approach takes the long view in reaching out in love and acceptance.

Another important part of our mission, however,  is to help mitigate the conflict that arises around this critical and divisive issue – both on an individual and community level.  As the national spotlight turns to Utah’s litigation over same-sex marriage, all participants of MBB have the opportunity to model compassionate conversation and empathy, no matter what side of the debate they are on. We encourage all who participate in the Mormons Building Bridges Facebook group and elsewhere to practice this habit and disposition of empathy and compassion through listening and learning from others. Please find the initiatives, events, and personal stories on how to do this on our website, mormonsbuildingbridges.org and our Facebook group.
