The third hour of any fifth Sunday throughout the year is set aside for local Bishops and Stake Presidents to identify topics of special interest to discuss. Wouldn’t it be great if you contacted your bishops and suggested that you discuss homosexuality and how we can create a welcoming space for members who are LGBT?
Using the church’s new website mormonsandgays.org, the lesson essentially prepares itself, with all sorts of videos and messages ready to be discussed. We’ve made it easy for you to invite you local leaders to do this by drafting a sample email you can send to your bishop or stake president.
Feel free to comment about this in the MBB Facebook group and let everyone know if you plan to contact your leaders, and add your own suggestions about how you plan to approach them.
Note: In 2015, the 5th Sundays fall on March 29, May 31, August 30, and November 29

Dear Bishop/President _______________________
First of all, thank you for all the work and energy you put into leading our ward/stake. I know this is a sacrifice for your family as well, and I appreciate what you do to attend to the temporal and spiritual needs of the members in our area. Our ward/stake is better off for the love and energy you put into serving those around you.
It is my understanding that the third hour of the fifth Sunday of the month (when there is a fifth Sunday) is set aside for the bishops and stake presidents to determine the lesson topic according to what they assess are the needs of their local congregations. It looks like September will have an fifth Sunday, and as a member of the ___________________ ward/stake, I feel that an important and timely topic of discussion would be same gender attraction.
I’ve been concerned about the amount of misunderstanding that exists among some members of the church on this topic and fear that the misunderstanding ends up unnecessarily making those members who are gay feel unwelcome. In 2 Nephi 26:33, we learn that Christ invites, “all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female”.
I would love to help make our ward/stake one where everyone feels welcome to come and feel the spirit and enjoy the company of fellow Latter-day Saints. I believe one way to move towards this goal would be to have a fifth Sunday discussion using the church’s new website www.mormonsandgays.org. The great thing about the website is that the lesson would already essentially be prepared. There are great videos by Elders Oaks, Cook and Christofferson discussing the topic and how we can reach out in love. There are also videos of members of the church who are attracted to their same gender discussing their experience.
I am grateful for the gospel of Jesus Christ and for the love and peace it brings into my life and want to do what I can to create a space where all can feel welcome to come and enjoy that same love and peace.
