Processing Mormon and LGBTQ+ Conflicts
To apply, please submit an email to email@example.com
Many people experience distress from conflicts between the teachings of the LDS Church and your own feelings about sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Conversations about these conflicts with loved ones, fellow church members, and ecclesiastical leaders can be daunting. Many of us are unsure which questions to ask, how to explain what we think and feel, and how to maintain healthy boundaries for ourselves.
The spiritual and emotional suffering that arise from these conflicts can feel immeasurable, but it does not have to be. The suffering can be reduced; not by changing our religion or sexual orientation or gender identity but by shifting the way we frame the conflict and manage our distress.
This FREE 24-hour Mormons Building Bridges Contemplative Retreat is designed to help you approach these tensions, conflicts, and challenging conversations by discussing the most important questions, exploring your thoughts and feelings safely, and helping you to create and maintain healthy interpersonal boundaries.
The retreat follows a simple curriculum of guided group discussions, introspection exercises, and individual journaling time. There is no teaching or instruction during these retreats; instead the focus is on creating safe space for contemplation about how to process our own internal conflicts. This retreat only suggests ways of approaching the conflicts rather than ways of fixing or resolving them. There are no ‘one-size-fits-all-quick-fixes’ offered in these retreats. Thus, these retreats take a long-term view of the issues; prioritizing personal wisdom, moral virtues, and a relationship with the Spirit which can in turn help us find our own path of managing the conflicts in healthy and sustainable ways. These retreats are only primers to get you started or to give you a boost in your own process. Ultimately, the MBB Winter Contemplative Retreat offers a rare opportunity for participants to reflect upon, renew, and reconnect with what matters most to them.
If you’re interested in more details about what will be discussed in this retreat, you can explore the Circles of Empathy small-group practice website.
